Study Sharing: The Art of Exhalation
Every morning or evening, I open my computer screen and join a Zoom video call. Sometimes the grid is packed with over twenty faces, and sometimes it looks quiet with just five. Through the screen, we clap rhythmically, sway our bodies, and then close our eyes to laugh. This is the online Laughter Yoga experience I am used to. Although most of it happens online with very little of the close interaction found in physical classes, the real relaxation in my shoulders and my gradually smoother breathing after every session make me deeply believe one thing: this physical response across the screen is definitely not something imagined out of thin air.
Recently, I read a short article by Dr. Kataria titled "Exhalation is Relaxation: Laughter Yoga Context". The vague feelings I always had suddenly found a place to rest.
Right at the beginning of the article, the author points out a very interesting perspective: breathing is the most natural rhythm of life, and the secret to relaxation is actually hidden within the act of "exhalation". If you think about it carefully, it is true. When we inhale or hold our breath, our bodies often carry a kind of tension and ready-to-go pressure. Only at the exact moment when the air is breathed out do release, calmness, and peace quietly follow.
The text lists a few very ordinary everyday examples. When we solve a major problem, we naturally breathe out and make a "haaa" sound from our mouths, releasing a sigh of relief. When yawning, the true sense of comfort usually arrives at the very end with that long, open-mouthed exhalation. Even the sobbing during crying is essentially a way of exhaling and releasing emotions. And of course, there is the laughter we know best—which is a series of forceful and rhythmic exhalations. This explains exactly why we feel incredibly light after laughing heartily with everyone online.
This seemingly simple experience actually has a solid scientific basis. The author mentions that exhalation stimulates the vagus nerve, which activates the body's natural "relaxation response." This slows down the heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and calms an anxious mind. At the same time, deep exhalation releases the accumulated carbon dioxide in the body, signaling safety to the system. In the physical mechanism of heart rate variability, the heart slows down slightly during exhalation, and this tiny variation improves our emotional regulation and mental resilience.
This makes me re-examine the essence of Laughter Yoga. Laughter Yoga is fundamentally an exercise centered on "exhalation." When we keep laughing in front of the screen, we are constantly emptying the stale air from our lungs, making space for the natural deep inhalation that follows.
Although most of my practices are online, lacking the vibration of a crowd gathered together in a physical event, the laws of science and the body do not change because of a screen. As long as you are willing to sit in front of the computer, open the screen to watch, and laugh along, your body will naturally follow the rhythm. The marks left by exhalation will honestly stay in a faster heartbeat and a deeper breath. This book report not only helps me understand the physical mechanisms but also gives me a grounded and certain understanding of the Laughter Yoga I do online every day.
